QUICKIE RAT
OBJECTIVE:To provide a racing event that may easily be flown “three up” and which employs relatively inexpensive and easily constructed control line racing models. To encourage and promote the success “of the average” control line flyer in control line racing competition.
2. GENERAL:
2.1 Applicability: All rules from the Unified Control Line Racing Rules apply to this event except as modified, appended or specified here.
2.2 Maintenance: It is imperative that the performance level of this event be maintained such that it is always possible to safely race “three up” on stranded lines. If at any time it is felt that the event must be changed from the three up format for safety concerns or that solid lines are required, then the event rules should be immediately modified so as to reduce the aircraft performance level. It is recommended that this event be reviewed by the National Control Line Racing Association on a yearly basis. As a guideline, if nominal speeds surpass 105 MPH (17.14 sec/7 laps), then the allowable venturi (part 4.7.1) should be reduced by 0.010’’. The sport of three up control line racing should be preserved at all costs if individual equipment is temporarily obsolete.
3. MODEL SPECIFICATIONS
3.1 Models will be of profile construction only. Refer to profile definition in Control Line General section. The use of cast pan or metal engine crutch is not allowed.
3.2 The control system, consisting of leadouts, bellcrank, pushrod and control horn will be totally exposed and external to normal airplane contours. The leadout wires will not be recessed into the win, the pushrod will not be mounted inside the fuselage, nor will the bellcrank be allowed to be mounted inside the fuselage. The leadout tip guides may be inset into the wing but should not be more than ½ inch in length.
3.3 The line connections to the model will be external to the aircraft wing tip.
3.4 The fuel tank shall be totally outboard of the centreline of the crankshaft of the engine.
3.5 Pressure fuel systems are not allowed, with the exception that the fuel tank vent tubes may be directed into the airstream.
4. ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS
4.1 Maximum total displacement shall be 0.4028 inches (6.6 cc). Engines must be production units assembled from factory available production parts. Engines and parts must have been produced in quantities greater than 500 and all must be or have been available through normal retail outlets in the USA. Parts substitution shall be limited to catalog listed parts produced in quantities greater that 500 units for the engine being altered and available commercially to anyone from the manufacturer of the engine. Engines may only be modified by removing parts or material from parts except as noted in the following paragraphs. No material or part may be added except as noted in the following paragraphs under this section.
4.2 The “engine“ is defined as the complete unit, ready to run, needing only prop, fuel and starting voltage except that the glow plug, venturi and/or restrictor, spraybar and needle valve, gaskets, bolts, drive washer, front washer, prop nut, shims, piston ring(s) (if used) and ball bearings (if used) need not be considered part of the production unit. These parts are not subject to the rules regarding quantity or source. In addition, chrome plating of a cylinder is allowed.
4.3 The glow plug must have a thread dimension of 1 / 4 – 32.
4.4 The engine must be of the front intake configuration. All air for the combustion process must come through the crankshaft. Altering nominal sub-- -port induction, timed holes in the case and sleeve or other techniques to circumvent the requirement that all air come through the specified venture opening are not allowed.
4.5 Only single by-pass port engines are allowed the engine as purchased and as used shall be of the single by-pass configuration. No schneurle or PDP porting is allowed.
4.6 No ABC or AAC piston/sleeve configurations are allowed.
4.7 No variable area carburettors shall be allowed. Each engine shall be equipped with a venture and spraybar meeting the following restrictions.
4.7.1 The venturi shall have an inside circular bore of not more than .315’’. The venture will maintain this diameter for at least 0.25’’ at the throat of the venturi where the spraybar will be located at the midpoint of the area.
4.7.2 The spraybar assembly will be located precisely through the centreline of the venture bore and shall have a constant circular cross section of diameter not less than 0.155’’ for the portion in the throat of the venturi.
4.8 No tuned pipes, mufflers or exhaust extensions are allowed.

VINTAGE TEAM RACING, CLASSES “A” AND “B”
BMFA Control Line Rule – Book 2
4.3.9.1 Object
To assist organizers and participants in Vintage Team Racing events by providing a clearly defined code of practice which typically retains the original character of models and events prior to 1 958.
4.3.9.2 Eligibility of Models
A Vintage Team Racing Model must be built to a constructionally detailed and dimensioned plan or three-view published or kitted prior to 1st January 1958. January 1958 magazines are accepted as published in 1957. The model must comply with the accepted team racing rules at the time of publication. Exceptions to this rule may be permitted as follows:
Where only photographic evidence of a design was published before I at January 1958 but the original designer(s) can confirm accurate of details of model by signing the plan.
Model Details
The following section gives typical (but not exclusive) guidelines for what may or may not be allowed:
(a)Entrants are encouraged to adhere as closely as possible to the
original design to capture the flavour and authenticity of the period. A +/-
5% dimensional building tolerance is allowed. Any modifications which, in
the opinion of the Contest Director, significantly change the appearance or
performance of the model as originally designed will not be allowed.
(b)Structures may be strengthened for racing to current rules using
materials and methods consistent with the period, i.e. solid balsa in place
of sheeting or planking, silk or nylon in place of tissue on built up flying
surfaces or stringered fuselages etc.
Models drawn or kitted, having wings with open structure (i.e. ribs covered with tissue, silk or sheet balsa), may have the wings made from sheet wood although the original wing thickness be maintained.
(c) Models with split fuselage construction (e.g. Footprint) may be made
in one piece, with a contemporary helmet cowl if the engine was originally
attached to the top half of the fuselage or a drop in layout if it was originally
fixed to the bottom half. Models designed with a built-in engine installation
may be modified to a drop in layout.
(d) Leadouts positions and spacing must be as per plan (no grouping)
and line connections must be external to the model unless shown as
internal on the original plan.
(e)Engine access must be as per plan with no metal pans or drop in
layouts except as noted in (c) above. Radial mounts can be replaced by
engine bearers. The cowl/engine position can be adjusted to suit different
engine dimensions and weights.
(f)Wheels must not be behind a vertical line through the plan position,
with track likewise conforming to the plan dimensions. A spreader bar may
be fitted if desired.
(g)Elevators must be as per plan (no single elevator instead of a
double).
(h)The use of glass, carbon, kevlar or other resin bonded fibre is not allowed except for localized repairs.
(i)Glowplug activation systems shall be limited to commercial clips, two-
pin plugs or jackplugs. Any other system must be shown on the plan or
have acceptable proof of use in the period.
(j)Spinners must be retained if shown on the original plan.Models may be flown with the spinners removed but, if so, a domed safety nut must be fitted.
(k)A shut-off should preferably be fitted but only for emergency use and not for the purpose of a normal pit stop. Each non-emergency use during a race will incur a 30 second penalty.
(l)A list of eligible models is given in appendix (l).Entrants are encouraged to find additional models with acceptable proof of eligibilityso that the list ran be extended Please contact the Control Line Technical Committee or the Vintage Team Race Special Interest Group via the BMFKs Leicester office.
(m) Circular bellcranks are permitted, however the original readout exit positions must be maintained.
(n) Class A models built to early FAI rules (i.e. Phfft) which do not comply with the 3’’ x 1,5’ at the pilot’s head or cockpit cover, will be measured at the appropriate section.
(o) Models may be converted to “drop in” layout if desired as long as the thrust line of the engine and the positions of the wing and tailplane are not significantly altered in plan or side elevation.
4.3.9.4Eligibility of Engines.
(a) A Vintage engine is one whose design and mark number was
advertised for sale prior to 1st January 1958, although the engine need not
necessarily have been manufactured by that date.
(b) The engine used in a model in the Vintage Team Racing shall
either conform to the above or, if of later design and manufacture, be a plain
bearing, non-schnuerle ported engine, commercially advertised at some
time.
Note: Schnuerle porting is defined as two or more directionally shaped ports, symmetrical about and adjacent to the exhaust; normally in conjunction with, but not limited to, a flat topped piston.
(c) The use of ETA 6Cs will be permitted as they are direct lineal
descendants of earlier, scarce, engines and offer no marked increase in
performance.
(d) Any engine modifications, replacement parts or hybrid engines must
use materials and technology clearly in use for model aircraft engines used
in Class A and B team racing prior to 1st January, 1958; e.g. a loop scavenged
engine will have a baffle piston. Although available at the time, peripheral
jet carburettors will be allowed.
Note – A hybrid engine must have the crankcase of an engine as defined in (a), (b) and (c) above.
(e) A list of approved engines is given in the appendix (2).
4.3.9.5Propellers
Propellers shall not be of the glass, carbon, kevlar or other resin bonded types.
4.3.9.6Tanks.
(a) Tank capacity, including fuel lines shall be 15 CM3 for Class A and 30 CM3 for Class B.
(b) There shall be no use of such modern features as multi-function valves and pressure refuelling.
(c)Refuelling shall be by squash bottle only.
4.3.9.7 Lines
(a) The control lines shall be measured from the centre of the handle
grip to the centre of the model. They shall conform to current BMFA safety
regulations for Team Racing and each ready to fly system of
handle/lines/model shall be subject to a pull test of 20 times the
model weight for both Class A and Class B.
(b) For Class A, the line length shall be 15.06 Metres (49’5’’) with a minimum line diameter, for both solid and multi-strand lines, of 0.3 mm (0.012’’).
For Class B, the line length shall be 17.06 metres (56’0”) with a
minimum line diameter for solid lines of 0.345 mm (0.0136”) and for multi-
-strand lines of 0.38 mm (0.015”).
4.3.9.8RaceDistances
Heats: Class A - 90 laps Class B - 75 laps
Finals: Class A - 180 laps Class B - 150 laps
4.3.9.9The Circle
(a) The radius of the pilot’s circle shall be 3 metres for both classes. The radius of the flight circle shall be 17.7 metres (58’1’’) for Class A and 20.56 metres (67’6”) for Class B.
(b) The circle shall be divided into 6 equal segments for the locations of the starting positions, choice of which shall be by means of a draw.
Race Conduct
The conduct of the race shall be in accordance with the rules laid down for
the conduct of Team Racing events in the current edition of the BMFA Contest Rules Book. In the interests of safety, the Contest Director may, at his discretion, group models/teams according to their performance/competence.
Special Provisions
In view of the probable dominance of Class A events by one type of Vintage engine, provision shall be made for an award to be given to the fastest team using a Vintage engine, as defined in 4.3.9.4 (a), other than an Oliver Tiger.
4.3.9.12Proof of Authenticity
Scrutineering will be carried out at the discretion of the Contest Director and may include model/engine, tank capacity and lines. The onus of proof lies with the entrant for any model/engine/feature not listed and he must have acceptable provenance on the day of the contest.
